The FMT fluid end integrates our patented secondary containment seal technology. It is designed to capture high pressure seal bypass chemical and reroute it back to the suction side of the fluid end. The FMT eliminates conventional V-packing and the associated gland nut. This virtually eliminates leaking chemical to the environment associated with packing equipped fluid ends and reduces operator workload to scheduled maintenance only. No more gland nut tightening. Using the FMT on a 5100 Series drive will eliminate stalling due to over tightening the gland nut. With the FMT fluid end you can reliably run your pneumatic drives on as little 5 psi.

Greenhouse gas emission reduction – 50%.

5100 Series pneumatic pumps are commonly used for chemical injection. Both new and used 5100 pumps are prone to high greenhouse gas emission, see table below. The cause is compression packing used to seal at the plunger. This packing can create tremendous friction on the plunger. To compensate for this potential pump “stalling” force the manufacturer installs a heavy gauge return spring. The combination of high friction and overcoming the heavy return spring create the necessity for higher drive gas pressure resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions.

The FMT fluid end eliminates compression packing allowing the 5100 Series pump to operate at low drive gas pressures down to 5 psi and a light gauge return spring. The overall drive gas emission reduction can exceed 50%.

The discharge check uses the same spring, balls and O-ring found in the conventional style Texsteam fluid end. However we redesigned this check valve so the seat assembly compression point with the discharge bushing ensures a leak-free seal without crushing the assembly onto the O-ring.

As well, the suction check uses the same ball and O-ring found in the Texsteam style head. However we redesigned the bushing so the seal point does not occur between the bushing and the exterior surface of the body. We seal inside the FMT body on machined faces. This eliminates the air interface and the associated corrosion and leaking.

Primed and ready to go.

The primer valve is a “brake bleed” style. We chose this design so operations can attach a small flexible tube to the valve and direct the primed chemical into a container to be returned to the chemical tank or disposed of elsewhere. This prevents the primed chemical from leaking down the face of the fluid end eliminating site contamination and potential corrosion. Snagging the bleed valve on clothing and accidentally exposing operations staff to harmful chemicals is eliminated as well.

Pump communications.

The FMT has a 1/8” NPT port directly into the discharge chamber. This port can be fitted with a pressure transducer. The sensor can be connected to a SCADA system for remote monitoring and alarm notification if the system stops injecting. During each stroke the pressure at this point increases from tank head pressure to injection pressure, maximum 3,000 psi. If the tank is empty, the suction check is clogged or damaged by debris, the pressure relief valve is bypassing, the high or low pressure tubing is damaged or the pump drive is not stroking pressure will not build at this point and the alarm can be issued.

Installation ease.

Installing the FMT fluid end is simple. Disconnect the tubing, fittings and pressure relief valve (PSV) from the existing fluid end. Remove the old fluid end, packing, plunger and gland nut. Thread on the new FMT until it bottoms out against the drive body. Turn the FMT counter clockwise, less than one turn, until it is vertically aligned with the tubing and tighten the lock nut. Reinstall the PSV and connect the tubing. You’re done.

The FMT body is available in carbon or 316 stainless steel. The tungsten carbide plungers (1/4”, 3/8” 1/2” and 11/16”) are compatible with all chemicals. We have an FMT model for 5100, 4300 and 1200 Series drives.

Carbon credits.

Both Federal and Provincial governments are working to lesson the impact of greenhouse gas by reducing emissions. From the table above, the 5100 Series drives are a gas hog and have become a target for regulation.

Instant emission reduction.

Using spring energized mechanically assisted seals the FMT fluid end drastically reduces friction with the plunger. Further the FMT is operationally maintenance free without a gland nut to over tighten. These two features can result in a 30% reduction in drive gas emission. Without conventional packing and the associated gland nut to over tighten the drive does not require the heavy return spring. To reduce drive gas emissions by a further 20% simply replace the heavy spring with a light gauge return spring.

Reduce chemical over injection.

5100 Series drives have varied operating characteristics. Sometimes they work perfectly and without issue. In other applications these drives are installed and after some time begin to leak chemical. Operations tightens the gland nut and cleans up the leaked chemical. Before long the fluid end is leaking again so operations repeats the maintenance process.

Increasing the plunger-packing fiction by tightening the gland nut can cause the drive to stall. To restart stroking the drive gas pressure is increased. Before long the cycle becomes tighten the gland nut and increasing the drive gas pressure, and repeat. Ultimately Operations need a trouble free, flowing well. To ensure production the pneumatic pump cycle results in over stroking and chemical over injection.

Reducing over injection by just one litre per day can save thousands of dollars annually.
